Tree Swallow Bird Houses - Things To Rember When Building

Tree Swallow Birds build nests using grass, straw, feathers and other light materials and  usually on the tops of tree cavities. They're apt to nest pretty much across all regions of the United States and Canada. Tree Swallow Bird Houses should contain an entrance hole with a diameter of one and half inches and thesize of the floor should be between 4X4 inches to 5X5 inches. The entire height of the box of the cage should be about 9 -10 inches. The height of the hole should be about 7 or 8 inches from the floor. The house should not contain anything for birds to perch on and ideally should be built up of wood.

If you are using a metal pole to elevate the bird house, then keep it 5 to 6 inches from the top of the metal pole. It should also be provided with a baffle to prevent predators like raccoons (which will climb to the birdhouse) from ravaging the nest. The baffle can either be a metal stove pipe, metal cone or a PVC pipe. It should be able to penetrate from the ground to the lower part of the birdhouse and slips on top of the mounting pole. A cap should be used for covering the pipe to prevent the entry of birds. The pipes can also be painted brown or green if needed in order for them to blend better with the surroundings.

Tree Swallow Bird Houses can also be used for other varieties of birds such as bluebirds, chickadees or titmice. A second birdhouse can also be placed 10 feet far away from the first one in the opposite direction. The tree swallow birds will fight a small circle surrounding the nest box from the other tree swallow birds. However, these birds will not bother if other bird species lives in the other nearby birdhouse.

Perfect locations for these birdhouses include fields, lawns, meadows and open woods. Tree swallow birds also like to live around rivers, ponds, ocean or lakes. These birds lay and preserve four to six white eggs for two weeks. The young one hatches within twenty days and become strong in flying just as soon they leave the nest. The old nests must be properly cleaned after the birds leave the house. The natural nesting of these birds was originally located around beaver ponds and wetland outlines where the woodpeckers have pecked holes in the dead trees.

The man made Tree Swallow Bird Houses are useful for the tree swallow birds to migrate to in treeless areas. Remember the nests must be removed from the house, after the completion of brood rearing seasons and always make sure the screws used in these birdhouses are resistant resistant to corrosion.
